Goodbye?

Last night, something truly tragic happened.

My beloved Sony Ericsson k800i* gave up the good fight and passed away. I think. I’m not completely sure to be honest but considering the problem and the research we’ve done, it all indicates that it’s best to let it go quietly.

I’m not all too keen on doing that though.

I know I’ve had the phone for 4 years and it’s absolutely ancient and I should sell my soul for some kind of smart phone that can make me coffee…but I don’t really see the point of those. Unlike most people, I tend to use my phone as a phone (and maybe occasionally a camera). I don’t need all the functionality of a blackberry or an iPhone.

Okay, I wouldn’t actually MIND having one…of course I wouldn’t, I’m a gadget whore…but I don’t need it for my life to function.

In fact, this whole mobile interwebz thing quite escapes me.

Personally, I like to have a screen I don’t have to squint at and I like to disconnect from the web occasionally. I don’t see the need to constantly be able to Twitter or access Facebook – in fact, I find it quite sad that there are people out in the world who can’t even go to the shop for some bread or milk  or something without leaving Twitter behind. That’s not exactly the most popular position to take these days but I don’t really care.

You can understand why I don’t want my little k800i to die then. It serves me well, it doesn’t frustrate me and it has proven extremely resilient to being thrown across the room. No, it didn’t break when I threw it, in fact, I haven’t thrown it in a couple of weeks. This was a spontaneous death. Like imagine Aunt Gertrude narrowly misses getting hit by a bus and then, in two weeks time, she’ll be walking along in her little old lady hat and suddenly fall over and die from something really obscure. That’s exactly what it’s like.

What really scares me about all of this is that I’m going to have to get the back up phone from my dad for a while. It’s a Nokia N95, the most pain in the arse phone I have ever had the displeasure of using.

*Yes the k800i. Remember how I upgraded to the k850i? Well, it pissed me off once or twice and so I swopped with the Boyf.

I so get you on this. I don’t want a fancy schmancy phone that can do everything from landing a spaceship to locating my car keys (no wait – that function would be awesome). I just want something that I can sms with, phone from and occasionally use to check my gmail account. Blackberries terrify me. And anyway, I couldn’t take a phone named after a fruit seriously.

I had a Nokia N95 before my more recent Samsung Omnia.. and must say. I miss the N95.

Not that I dont LOVE my new phone.. just that I miss the simplicity of the old N95.

*sigh* There is just no frikken pleasing me sometimes.. ;-)

    Well,of course the N95 is horrible – it’s a Nokia.

If you do plump for a smartphone, make sure it has a QWERTY keyboard like the Samsung Omnia.

Sorry – messed that up: If you do plump for a smartphone, make sure it has a QWERTY keyboard like the Samsung Omnia. Doesn’t.

These fancy touchy feely phones are more trouble than they are worth, specially fiddling round with styluses and stuff (or is that styli?). I say keypad phones are safer and easier.

.. oh and don’t get one of them Xperia jobbies. It appears to turn a person into a Smartass, albeit a Smartass WITH qwerty..

Tamara – Exactly. And you’re right, it being named after a fruit is very off putting. I know it’s unpopular, but if I had to get one of these OTT things, I’d get an HTC or something over the BB because of it’s silly name.

B – Nort. I haven’t liked Nokia since way way back in the day. I feel like they gave up their simplicity and waste too much of my time to get anything done. But it’s okay because I talked the Boyf into switching with me. I now have the beloved Sony k850i and he has the crappy thing.

6k – While that was nasty in a way, at least you didn’t rub your SEX1 in my face for a change.

Po – And the tactile sensation of pressing the keys actually satisfies you somehow. Tis true.

B – He’s always a smartass. The phone didn’t make any difference whatsoever.
